"Understanding the Role of Foot Health Professionals in Maintaining Optimal Foot Health"

Before the 1990s, those offering foot care services were commonly referred to as chiropodists, regardless of their level of training. However, with the introduction of the Podiatry degree, professionals who completed this program were recognized as podiatrists. Chiropodists had the option to attain the same level of expertise as podiatrists through additional qualifications. However, restrictions on the use of the title "chiropodist" led to the establishment of the term "Foot Health Professional" (FHP) to denote their level of training and expertise.

A podiatrist is skilled and authorized to address a wide range of foot and lower leg conditions, including performing surgical procedures and prescribing medications. On the other hand, an FHP is trained and insured to provide fundamental foot maintenance services such as nail care, callus and corn removal, especially for individuals with diabetes.

A crucial aspect of an FHP's role involves assisting individuals in improving their mobility and ensuring their overall comfort.

What is a Foot Health Professional and what do they do?

A Foot Health Professional (FHP) is a certified specialist dedicated to helping individuals of all ages maintain optimal foot health. They offer comprehensive guidance on routine foot care and are adept at addressing common foot issues such as calluses, corns, and fungal infections. Additionally, FHPs are skilled in identifying more serious foot concerns associated with diabetes or poor circulation and can refer individuals to specialized care when necessary. Initial consultations with an FHP typically involve a thorough review of the individual's medical history, a comprehensive assessment of their foot condition, and the development of a personalized care plan. Subsequent appointments are tailored to meet the specific needs of each individual and generally last approximately 30 minutes. During these appointments, individuals are asked to remove their footwear for a comprehensive foot assessment and treatment.
